Christena Irvine on Public Sector Cuts Radio Debate
Christena Irvine – manager of CU Marketing - recently took part in a debate for BBC Radio Shetland on public sector cuts.
As recruiter and secretary for the Shetland branch of the Federation of Small Businesses she put forward the case for a level playing field for small businesses in Shetland. This included speeding up the provision of fast broadband links and cheaper fuel prices in Shetland.
She said “Small businesses provide 50% of GDP in this country so they are likely to be the ones who get us out of this mess. The council should protect the services which help small businesses grow and cut services which are readily available in the private sector, for example: business advice and restaurants”.
The debate was chaired by Mark Inchley and the panel also included Alistair Carmichael (Orkney and Shetland MP), Sandy Cluness (Convenor of Shetland Islands Council), and Ian Kinniburgh (Chair of NHS Shetland).
